Lecture Summary:
Veterinary nurses play a pivot role in the management of wounds in practice. To be effective in this role it is important to have a good understanding of wound healing and the options available for management of both acute and chronic wounds.
Using case examples, the course will cover the following aspects of wound management and delegates will have an opportunity to participate in decision making for a variety of wounds:
* Wound healing and why the way different wounds are created can influence healing.
* Patient triage and the initial management of wounds including wound lavage, techniques for initial wound debridement and choosing the first wound dressing.
* Open wound management: which dressing when, including the use of negative pressure wound therapy and how to minimise bandage related complications.
* Wound closure and reconstruction of wounds.
* Common causes of non-healing wounds including managing biofilms and infection control.
