Lecture Summary:
Rabbits are a popular pet species, with an estimated 1.5 million kept as
pets in the UK. They are often much-loved members of the family, with many
established as ‘house rabbits’.
As a prey species however, they can be excellent at hiding signs of illness
and disease. As a result, it is common for patients to present critically
ill, with urgent veterinary care required.
This day course gives a thorough overview of rabbit medicine and surgery.
We will begin with a recap of appropriate prophylactic health care: When and
what to vaccinate against? How to treat and reduce the risk of
Encephalitozoan cuniculi? What ectoparasite treatments are appropriate?
We will then review the most common clinic diseases, discussing clinical
signs, diagnostic investigation and treatment options. Diseases covered
include dental disease, gastrointestinal stasis and gastric bloat,
respiratory tract disease and middle and external ear disease.
The course will be illustrated with case examples and many high-resolution
photos and videos. There will also be plenty of opportunity for delegates
to ask questions and contribute to clinical discussions.
Topics include:-
* Encephalitozoan cuniculi
* Ectoparasites
* Dental disease – surgery and medical management
* Gastrointestinal stasis
* Gastric bloat – surgical considerations
* Respiratory disease
* Middle and external ear disease – surgery and medical management
