Lecture Summary:

Many of us will be presented with dogs in a diabetic crisis – be that caused by ketoacidosis, hypoglycaemia or something else. We are also occasionally presented with other endocrine emergencies such as acute Addisonian crises, insulinomas or calcium disorders. Knowing what to do when, and why, is key to resolving these situations quickly and with the minimum of stress.

However even if we know, practice is still needed to maintain proficiency. During this training day therefore we will work together through several case examples using interactive anonymous technology to practice how to deal with these cases – and in doing so delegates will hopefully learn a few tips as well.

The endocrine system also plays a critical role in the survival of all critical care cases. The last session will focus on the role of cortisol and thyroxine in the seriously ill animal and the arguments for and against the treatment of sick euthyroid syndrome and the use of glucocorticoids in shock and septic patients.

Topics include:-
Triage of the collapsed diabetic

Approach to diabetic ketoacidosis – case based

Approach to other diabetic emergencies – hypoglycaemia, neuropathies, septicaemias, pancreatitis

The diagnosis and management of acute Addisonian crisese – case based

Approach to other endocrine emergencies (insulinomas, calcium disorders etc.) – case based

The endocrine system in the critically ill – should we use steroids in the ICU?
